In just a few days, ghouls, witches and princesses will take to the streets. Between the costumes, pumpkin carving, haunted houses and trick-or-treating, Halloween is full of hauntingly good times for the entire family.
Make this holiday a howling good one while still balancing out the sugar buzz with these ideas for a fun – and healthy – Halloween for the entire family:
1. Eat Before Your Treat. Don’t send the kids out trick-or-treating when they’re hungry. Providing them with a healthy snack or meal before they go out will help them from diving right into their goody bags. Make it fun for the entire family with ghoulishly delightful Halloween-themed meals and snacks, such as:
2. Take Advantage of Local Community Events. Connect with your neighbors and make some new friends by participating in organized celebrations at your local community center, city park or YMCA. Make sure you wear your costume!
3. Active Trick-or-Treating. Get the whole gang moving by turning trick-or-treating into a game. Map out a route for the kids to help them explore the neighborhood and get in some serious steps (aim for 2,000). You can also set a goal for how many houses you will walk to, and try to beat it! Walking around the neighborhood is great exercise and can become a regular family activity.
4. Throw a Spooky (Silly) Party. Invite friends and neighbors over for a fiendishly good party, or entertain the kiddos with these ideas for creative Halloween-themed games:
- Frankenstein Bowling – Paint faces on cans, and then stack the scary (okay, more like cute) dudes to see how many you knock down in one shot. Or for some Ghost Bowling, tape a few googly eyes to a pack of toilet paper, stack it in a pyramid, and voila! Easiest party game ever.
- Halloween Bingo – This Halloween board swaps out numerals (snooze…) for witches’ hats, ghosts, and black cats. You can use anything from googly eyes to popcorn as markers. Be creative! (Print out your free Halloween Bingo cards from Studio DIY here!)
- Glow-in-the-Dark Ring Toss – Wrap glow-in-the-dark duct tape around a few bottles and see how many glow stick bracelets kids can get around the bottlenecks.
- Mummy Relay Race – Gather as much toilet paper and paper towels as you can, divide players into groups of two and have one wrap the other up like a mummy as quickly as possible. Whichever team’s mummy runs to the finish line first wins.
