6 Ways to Get Moving This Summer

Summer is a great time to get moving. It’s finally warm, which means it’s the perfect time for children and families to get outside and play together!

Whether you ride your bike to work or school, chase after your dog in the park, or walk around the neighborhood with your family after dinner, set a goal to work in at least 60 minutes of movement each day.

So what are you waiting for? Try some of these tips to stay motivated all summer long. Your body will thank you:

1. Be a Sport – Join a community sports league: softball, soccer, basketball, flag football or even Ultimate Frisbee. You will have a blast and get your exercise in at the same time.

2. Join a Group – Working out with others keeps you on target. Your friends/co-workers/classmates will hold you accountable for attending each day and you’ll enjoy working up a sweat together.

3. Have a Ball – Gather friends and family and toss a football across the yard, kick a soccer ball through the park or take turns swatting a baseball with a bat and running to retrieve the ball.

4. Amp Up the School Day – Keep the outdoor fun alive and get your kids moving more before, during and after school by becoming a Let’s Move! Active Schools (LMAS) champion. Find out everything you need to know here and for even more tips, follow the conversation, using the hashtag #ActiveSchools on Twitter.

5. Two-Wheel Tour – Every city and town is full of unexplored neighborhoods and areas. Why not jump on your bike and check out the sites? TrailLink can help you find nearby biking paths, and also help you burn calories while getting a different view of the terrain. Want to make this a family outing, but your little one hasn’t yet mastered traveling on two wheels? Check out a training bike like FirstBIKE, which has a cycle for children aged 2-5, along with a no-stress method of learning to ride!

6. Offer Your Services – Volunteering for a community service project is a great way to add some activity to your day, while helping improve your community. Help build a home with Habitat for Humanity, bike, walk or run for the charity of your choice with Charity Miles, or work to clean up a park in your neighborhood. Volunteer Match can help you get started by providing volunteer information and listings in your local community.
