Making the Most Out of National Bike to Work Day

Biking is making a comeback. Across America, more and more individuals are choosing to bike to work, with the number of cycling commuters increasing 62 percent from 2000 to 2013, according to the League of American Bicyclists. While it can seem daunting at first, if you have ever thought about trying out a more active commute, tomorrow, National Bike to Work Day, is the perfect opportunity to take the plunge. Cyclists of all levels will don their helmets and hit the road to continue a tradition that has been around since 1956.

For those planning to bike to work tomorrow, here are a few things to remember:

  1. Plan Out Your Route Ahead of Time: Nobody wants to get lost on their way to work. Make sure you have your route fully mapped out the night before to avoid any AM stress. Google maps is a great tool to find out if there are any bike paths nearby.
  2. Bring a Change of Clothes: If you have a lengthy commute, you might want to change once you make it to the office. If you’re able to plan ahead, you can bring a change of clothes the day before, but if all else fails, try a day-of backpack or a pannier.
  3. Find a Biking Buddy: If anyone you work with lives nearby, meet up beforehand and commute in together.
  4. Leave the Ear Buds at Home: While music is great while driving, staying 100 percent focused while biking is key to a safe commute.
  5. Make Eye Contact with Drivers and Always Signal: Let’s face it, cars still rule the road, so make sure you’re predictable and let drivers know what you’re up to:
  1. Always Wear a Helmet: In a majority of bicyclist accidents, the most serious injuries are to the head, highlighting the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. Helmet use has been estimated to reduce head injury risk by 85 percent.

Most important, relax and enjoy the ride!
