Family Fun Month: 5 Ways to Make the Most of the End of Summer

With back to school right around the corner, now is a great time to make the most of the end of summer and relish Family Fun Month! Spending extra family time together can be a quick and inexpensive way to de-stress, make some memories and get active. We rounded up five ways to maximize your fun in August:

1. Visit a farmers market. Have the kids join you at the local farmer’s market to pick out fruits and veggies. Some markets feature vibrant live music and special events that the whole family will enjoy. Need help finding a market near you? Check out USDA’s online directory!

2. Enjoy a beach day. If you’re lucky enough to live in driving distance of the shore, pre-pack some lunches and head to the beach for some family fun in the sun. Build a sand castle … check. Splash in the water … check. Walk along the boardwalk … check. And don’t forget, with all the excitement and great weather, make sure to stay hydrated!

3. Play some games. There is nothing wrong with some family-friendly competition. A game of mini golf is fun for the entire family and will have everyone excited to get a hole-in-one. Or round everyone up for a series of outdoor games to get everyone moving – races, obstacle courses and even tag. Faced with a rainy day? It’s a chance to get creative! Build a fort, play board games or keep everyone moving with some interactive activities. GoNoodle has some great interactive games online. Check them out here and sign up for free!

4. Enjoy a night under the stars. Use your backyard or a nearby camp ground to experience a night of camping. Pitch a tent, cook dinner over the campfire and enjoy some nighttime storytelling!

5. Volunteer. Gather the family and give back to your local community. Take the time to show your kids the importance of helping others by volunteering at a local food pantry or animal shelter. VolunteerMatch is a fantastic resource to help you find opportunities near you.
