5 Backyard Winter Adventures

Snow hiking

Shorter days and colder temperatures can inspire even the most active families to hibernate. But we love that the colder months offer opportunities for activities that just can’t be done in warmer seasons. Here are 5 winter activities that are fun for the backyard or any open space you have access to. Shake off those winter “blahs” and bundle up in your warmest layers for some fun in the outdoors!

1. Snow Painting – Fresh snow makes the best canvas for your next art project. All you need are a few water bottles with squirt tops, some food coloring, water and snow. Fill each bottle with water and food coloring, head outside and paint away. A little imagination can lead to some amazing works of art!

2. Downhill Adventures – Winter is a perfect time to get kids familiar with cold-weather sports. No need to barrel down the slopes just yet, but if you have a little open space and access to a pair of borrowed skis or a snowboard, you can suit your little ones up and let them slide around on a flat area to get used to the feel of the boards under their feet. Another fun option is snowshoeing—pick up an affordable pair (check out these, from Target) and go trekking through the backyard!

3. Winter Campfire – Even if you live in Los Angeles, Miami or another warm-weather locale, a campfire is a perfect way for families to enjoy a winter’s night. If your city permits outdoor fires, check out these helpful hints for what you will need, and steps to build your fire safely. Get ready to gather your family and friends, roast some marshmallows and tell scary stories around your campfire!

4. Play Snow Soccer – You can add a twist to any of your favorite games or warm weather sports when you play them in the snow. Soccer is a great option – especially if you have a bright ball – but any sport is a little more exciting in the snow. And a great way to stay warm!

5. Build an Igloo – If you’re fortunate enough to have regular heavy snowfall during the winter months, rally the troops to build an igloo or snow fort. Aluminum bread pans can be quite useful as brick molds! Yankee Magazine even has a very useful article explaining how to build an igloo in 10 steps. Check it out!
