7 Kitchen Hacks That Will Change the Way You Cook

Work, errands and school activities can leave even the most determined home cooks exhausted at the end of the day. Here are seven creative kitchen hacks to help speed up your “six o’clock shuffle”:

1. Shuck corn like a pro – Removing the leaves and silk from ears of corn can be a time-consuming task. Try microwaving the entire ear of corn for 4 to 4 ½ minutes before you shuck them – cut off both ends of the corn and the ears will slide out, husk and silk free!

2. Quickly slice cherry tomatoes – Let’s face it, trying to individually slice cherry tomatoes can be tedious. But if you have two plates, this problem is solved. Place cherry tomatoes on one of the plates, then put the other on top. Hold the top plate down, slice straight through and voila – perfect slices.

3. Freeze fresh herbs in olive oil – Purchasing an entire sprig of herbs for one recipe can be a waste of time and money. Instead, buy that sprig once, then freeze the leftover herbs in olive oil. This prevents browning and freezer burn, and you’ll always have fresh herbs available for cooking.

4. Remove strawberry stems with a straw – No need to waste parts of the strawberry when removing the stem!

5. Core Iceberg Lettuce in 3 seconds – Need to prepare a quick salad, but always having to chop around that pesky core? Check out this quick hack:

6. Quickly peel garlic – No more sticky fingers and time wasted trying to remove the skins.

7. Remove egg yolks from the white – This clever hack requires only an empty water bottle! The method is simple: you crack an egg into a bowl, squeeze an empty plastic water bottle slightly, and place the bottle opening over the yolk. When you release your grip, the yolk is sucked inside, separating itself from the white. Squeeze the yolk into another bowl and you’re done.
