October Family Fun Bucket List

Who says family fun has to end with summer? From pumpkin everything to being able to jump in a pile of crunchy leaves, there’s a lot to love about autumn. That’s why we created the ultimate fall family bucket list so you and your little ones can make the most of the season:

1. Pick apples at a local orchard. Is there anything better than a crisp, juicy apple eaten in the cool fall air? We think not! Now’s the time to make the most of the season and take a family trip to a local orchard (click here for help finding an orchard near you!). After a day spent picking fall’s bounty, head to the kitchen and cook up this kid-friendly Apple Pear Cranberry Crisp.

2. Explore fall colors. Red, orange, even pink – fall colors this time of year are spectacular in much of the country and not to be missed! Grab your sweaters and go on a nature walk around the neighborhood to collect leaves and maybe even spot a bird or two. Not only will you get some exercise, you’ll get to experience the beauty that’s right in your own back yard. TrailLink can help you find nearby paths, and also help you burn calories while getting a different view of the color-changing terrain.

3. Score a touchdown. Everybody wins when you invite the neighbors over for a friendly game of tag football. After you’ve worked up an appetite, feed the gang some tasty game day snacks.

4. Set up an obstacle course. Keep your kids moving, jumping and skipping by creating a backyard obstacle course. Use items you may already own like jump ropes, hula hoops or even rolled up towels! Need some inspo? Check out these clever ideas from Martha Stewart Living.

5. Get lost in a corn maze. Letting your children wander through a corn maze is the ultimate fall family activity. And where you find a corn maze, you usually find pumpkin patches and hay rides for some good ol’ fashioned fun!

6. Set out on a trail. Mountain biking. Hiking. Rock climbing. No matter which outdoor adventure you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the gorgeous fall foliage when you head outdoors. For some inspiration, check out this list of the top 10 family-friendly hikes in U.S. parks.

7. Plant bulbs for spring. Pansies, irises and peonies can all be planted in early fall! Plus, garden centers often offer major deals right before winter arrives. Also, did you know that you can also plant vegetables this time of year? Here’s a guide to 15 vegetables you can plant now for a fall harvest. Get going soon and you could have arugula, spinach, and radishes in time for Halloween!

8. Spend the night under the stars . Flashlight? Check. Bug spray? Check. Healthy s’mores? Check! Forgo the cabin and pitch a tent in your own back yard! We like these tips for “before-dark” games from Parenting magazine.
