6 Ways to Get Excited About Cycling

There’s no doubt that cycling is a wonderful sport. It’s great for our physical and mental health, it’s a fun social activity, and the best part – cycling is something that just about anyone can do. It’s immensely accessible because no cycling skill is impossible to master.

But while jumping on that bike is an excellent way to get fit and healthy, you may eventually find yourself stuck in a cycle rut. Getting tired of the same old routes is understandable, and can leave you uninspired. But that’s not an excuse to give up!

All you need to do is to look for thrilling and challenging new ways to make riding your bike even more fun, so we came up with easy ideas to get excited about cycling:

1. Download a Cycling App and Track Your Stats. By downloading and using an app, you’ll be able to keep track of your speeds, distances, and more. Not only will you be able to track your progress, but you’ll also be able to have fun challenging yourself to beat your own scores! We really like to use Cyclemeter, Map My Ride, Endomondo, and Strava.

2. Get Your Friends Involved. Everything is more fun with your friends, so why not get them involved too? You’ll be able to go on group trips, challenge each other, have races, and find motivation when you’re just not “feeling it” that day.

3. Join a Cycling Club. If your friends aren’t into cycling, joining a cycling club can be a great way to discover new routes and learn new tips – all while making new, like-minded friends as you meet up for rides. USA Cycling can help you find a club near you here.

4. Go Somewhere You’ve Never Been Before. Don’t be afraid to go off track. If you’re sticking to the same old routes and roads, that’s probably why you’re finding yourself a little bored with your cycling routine. Find that sense of adventure and don’t be afraid to take a new path, bike over a dusty dirt trail or take the long way to your destination. TrailLink can help you find nearby biking paths and different kinds of terrain to explore, or load your bike into the car and drive to a new starting point for your ride. You’ll see and experience new things – both during your journey and once you’ve reached your destination!

5. Take Part in a Race. It may be that you need more of a challenge to shake things up a little, so why not consider a race? You’ll be able to try out a fun route as you race from A to B. And training for the race will keep you motivated for the ultimate goal. Get rolling when you find a local race near you.

6. Bike for Charity. If you’re going to cycle, why not cycle with a purpose! The Charity Miles app lets you earn money for causes you believe in simply by tracking your bikes, walks or runs. Each mile you complete will be even more rewarding because you’ll know you’re helping support organizations that are making the world a better place. Even better, Charity Miles has partnered with Family Circle magazine and PHA with the goal of moving 20.17 miles in 2017. You can find out how to get involved here.
