5 Tips To Get Moving This Thanksgiving

Whether it’s soaking the turkey in a secret brining solution, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade over breakfast or dedicating the evening to a big game of monopoly with football on in the background, many families have special Thanksgiving traditions. This year, we have a few ideas to help you keep your family moving in between all of the cooking and general merriment. Who knows, you might even start a new family tradition!

1. Time To Trot. Every year, more and more Turkey Trots are popping up in communities across the nation, giving families an easy way to get moving together on Thanksgiving. Click here to find an event nearby, and if there isn’t one in your neighborhood yet, take a cue from Kids in the Game and set up your own race!

2. Plan A Scavenger Hunt. This one takes a little bit of preparation, but putting together a scavenger hunt will keep everyone occupied and active. Older kids can lead teams and place different clues around the neighborhood, with the final clue leading everyone back home in time for a delicious meal. For younger kids, try a backyard scavenger hunt – NWF Kids has an hour-long DIY version with printable checklists, including an option with pictures of each item (easy for the littlest members of your crew!).

3. Take A Walk. Grab the gang and head outside for a walk around the neighborhood. Or if you have anywhere more rugged nearby, plan an afternoon hike that will leave the whole family hungry and ready for a Thanksgiving Day feast.

4. Bike Around. Whether you want to go on a solo ride or recruit friends or family members to join, hopping on a bike is a great way to get your heart rate up and work in a little physical activity into your day.

5. Treat Yourself. Is there a class at a nearby studio that you have been dying to try, but have let the sticker shock keep you away? Grab a friend and take the plunge … it is a holiday after all!
